I tried it before posting and confirmed it works - when done properly.
You have not inserted a FILENAME field as instructed.

Here's the simplest way to show the problem.
1 Create PDF a file named "[.PDF" 2 Create an adjacent .DOC 3 Open the DOC 4 Press CTRL+K and select the PDF, click OK 5 Do CTRL+click on the link 6 See "Cannot open the specified file." Step 4 shows ![]() |

Your image in post #15 shows that you typed {FILENAME \p} into the HYPERLINK field. That is not how to create a field. Kindly read the instructions in the link I gave you.

The DOC would be most useful. Thanks.

Paul has been very patient with you. He is one of the people who knows more about fields than most people working in the Word team at Microsoft. He does expect people to follow his instructions, though.
Did you read the instructions at https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...nal-files.html |

I do appreciate Paul's effort.

Likewise I'd be grateful if anyone can confirm they get the reported problem EDIT: in Word 2003. 1 Create PDF a file named "[.PDF" 2 Create an adjacent .DOC 3 Open the DOC 4 Press CTRL+K and select the PDF, click OK 5 Do CTRL+click on the link 6 See "Cannot open the specified file." Replace "[" by "!" and the fail disappears. Thanks. |

Tried and tested in Word 2019. No fail at all.
Your Word 2003 is way obsolete. Upgrade your copy of MS Office. |

Thanks. I wonder which version fixed this.
Would you be so kind as try # too? On Word 2003 this fails for a different reason: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...e-address.html |

Having found no solution to this problem https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...hyperlink.html on Word 2003, I'd like to know if it exists on Word 2007 (before I attempt an upgrade). Any idea?
The test is simple: 1 Create PDF a file named "[.PDF" 2 Create an adjacent .DOC 3 Open the DOC 4 Press CTRL+K and select the PDF, click OK 5 Do CTRL+click on the link 6 Word 2003 fails: "Cannot open the specified file." Replace "[" by "!" and the fail disappears. Thanks. |

You should not "update" to Word 2007.
It is the worst version of Word since Word 2000. It was marketed before it was ready. At least get 2010, 2019 per Robert. I am merging this with your prior question on the subject. |

Because if it fixes the problem for my specific use of reading such a document, I probably don't care about its other failings e.g. for editing. Thanks. If I had the result of my test showing 2010 does not suffer the problem, then I would. |

The "solved" status on this issue is incorrect. This thread contains no demonstration of a solution.
