I am afraid you don't quite get my question. I am alright with the headings and what not. However, when it comes to captions of figures I put in the thesis, it is a different matter. They appear like this:
Table I.1 (I want it to be Table 1.1) Figure II.4 (I want it to be Figure 2.4) The Roman Numerals appear because I use roman numerals for my Heading 1. What do you think? Thanks |

As far as the reader is concerned, what you're seeing is what matches your document: Figure II.4 is figure n° 4 within Chapter II. Visually, it's not a style of numbering I'd recommend; and what happens when you're in a discussion and someone wants to say "take a look at table XIX.3"?
It would help, too, if you explained what numbering you want within each chapter. Are there numbered subheadings? Do tables and figures use the same sequence – Table 1, Table 2, Figure 3 – or (more readable) separate sequences– Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Table 3, Figure 2. The Romans have had their day <g> But the comments from Charles are still bang up to date. |

I'm fine with Roman numerals. I'm a lawyer and we still use Latin from time to time. ![]() |

I'm OK with Roman numerals if they show up occasionally in a document, but I wouldn't want to present a numbering scheme that mixed Roman and Arabic.
