![]() I recently learned that the Organizer can be used to copy styles from one document to another. I have used it several times, saving a lot of time over my previous method of doing a copy format (Ctrl+Shift+C) for each style. I just tried it to copy two styles (Caption and Heading 1) from a template (xyz.dotx) to a document (abc.docx). The Caption style does not appear to be copied at all and the Heading 1 style copies only part of the properties (it does not copy the font color). If I open a new document (Ctrl+N), define a Heading 1 and a Caption, then follow the same procedure, both the Hdeading 1 and Caption styles are copied except for the font color. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong? Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 08-31-2015 at 08:57 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Chances are good that one or both of the styles you are copying are based on other styles not being copied. The font color could be in the style not being copied. When copying styles based on each other, it is a good idea to select them all in the organizer (Ctrl-Click) and then click on the copy button three times. Otherwise the linkages between styles can be lost.

Charles,
I created a new document, then tried copying all styles. It got all of the headings, but not the Caption style. |

The Caption style is a built-in style. Out of the box, it is based on the normal style. When you made your copy, did you copy the normal style as well as the Caption style? Did you copy them three times? These styles are changed by style sets and by themes. The color is set as Accent 1 on my computer. Any chance your base document is using a different style set or theme than your target document? What is the theme color palette in both documents, are they the same? You can check this by looking at the Modify Style dialog and clicking on the button for color. The top row is the Theme Colors for the theme in use with that style set and theme. I would consider going into a copy of your base document and modifying the style to not be based on any other style. Then assign a real color to it, not a theme color, that is, one from the choices under the theme row. See http://www.gcflearnfree.org/word2010/18 for more on styles and themes. |

Charles: One should have to copy the Normal Style in order to be able to copy the Caption Style. Note, though, that the Caption Style is not ordinarily available for copying via the Organiser unless it's been used in the source document.
Jennifer: you might want to have a look my attachments in later posts in: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word-...nizercopy.html

Hello I also have some problem with styles, especially with the organizer. When I open the organizer from a file (File A) and select a particular file (File B) in the organizer the Heading font is Calibri.
When I open the organizer from another file (File C) and select the same file (File B) in the organizer the Heading font is Cambria. I could not figure out what do I do wrong, and due to this I cannot copy style from File B to File C. Anyone can help? Thanks a lot Adam |

Paul, I just saw this older post. If the normal style is different in the two documents you would need to copy it in order for the Caption style to be the same in both documents if Caption is based on the normal style. The Caption style is available for copying in the Organizer in a new document on my computer. (See below) This may depend on which styles are set to be displayed using Manage Styles and the preferences. However, in my Word 2010 installation, the Caption style is set to be hidden until used. |
