Default Excel 2003 - Avoiding split and merged cells upon paste of Word table

In Word I select and copy this table:





Then in Excel (new sheet) I paste it, hoping for:



but I get:



Oh dear. B1 is split and A1 has a merged A2.

How can I get the desired result without manual fixup?
