See attached file, salimnore. This uses formulas in a way that you envisaged. It has blank rows but you can 'Ctrl+t' to make it a table and then filter out the blank rows.
I'm not sure however that this is any quicker than just converting your data to a table and then filtering. You could use a macro to get exactly what you want.
