Format Font
I am unable to change permanently the font format. I know the standard method, but when I click Default, it returns to Calibri when I open a new page.
I have tried doing it in STYLES but that does not help. I have carefully followed the instructions from Microsoft "How to set the default font in Word". I have done a Repair. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Thank you |

Hi Herb,
Uninstalling/Reinstalling rarely rectifies anything a repair won't. What you might try is deleting Word's 'Normal' template and starting over (this doesn't get deleted/replaced when you uninstall and reinstall Word).

What I suggested was deleting the Normal template (you'll have to close Word first) and starting over, not merely persisting with attempts to modify the existing one. When you re-start Word, you can then try updating the new Normal template that Word will create.

Hi Herb,
Deletion is done via Windows Explorer. Simply input: C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Temp lates\ into the Windows Explorer address bar. Assuming your templates are in the default location, that should get you there. Template filenames end in .dot, .dotx or .dotm However, it occurs to me there may be another way to resolve the problem: • Select a paragraph with the 'Normal' Style in effect. • On the Home tab, click on the little arrow in the bottom-right corner of the 'Styles' panel. • Scroll up/down till you find the 'Normal' Style entry. • Click on the ¶ for the 'Normal' Style and choose 'Modify'. • In the dialog that appears, set the characteristics you desire. Additional options are available under 'Format'. • Click on 'New documents based on this template', then 'OK'. The 'Normal' Style for any new documents you create should now have the desired characteristics.

I had tried modifying the Normal Style before with no lck. I have tried it again and when I open a new page I still get Calibri as the default.
I am sorry, but I cannot see how to delete the Normal Style in Windows Explorer. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything. Herb |

Hi Herb,
It's the Normal template, not the Normal Style that one might delete. To do that, go to Word Options|Advanced > General > File Locations and note where Word's 'User templates' are stored. Close Word, then navigate to the 'User templates' folder. You should be able to see a file named Normal.dot(x/m) there. You can delete that file. Word will create a new one when you re-start Word. You can then start over with the template modifications.

I am sorry but I am not making any progress
I have found the file listing for "user templates", but when I try to look for it in Windows Explorer, I cannot find Normal.dot.... anyplace. I tried to do a search for it,including hidden files, but it just does not seem to be there. Herb |

Hi Herb,
Word's 'User templates' folder is ordinarily hidden, so you won't find it by trying to navigate there - you need to type the path from post #6 into Windows Explorer.

Thank you, but I have given up.
I cannot locate Normal.dotm. I have looked in hidden folders, and unchecked File extensions. I have done a search for the file. I have entered the path into Windows Explorer. I have searched using Bing and have found five or six different ways to solve the issue. Thanks to you, I now understand how Normal works. Herb |
