Question Office 2021: Why is the space between the number and the text in the heading inconsistent in the Tab

Office 2021: Why is the space between the number and the text in the heading inconsistent in the Table of Contents?

In the screenshot below, I couldn’t figure out why the space between the number and the text in the heading appears inconsistent in the Table of Contents, even though the Table of Contents is generated automatically.

What could be causing this issue?

It is a result of your tab settings. The second number has more characters pushing the tab over to the next available tab stop.

And, it does not even necessarily take more digits. Sometimes even fatter digits. In many fonts some digits use more space.

Bottom line, adjust the tab settings.

If your TOC n styles have the default setting to update automatically you will be changing the style settings so all entries of that level will have the same setting.

I think you'll find that, unless perhaps you're using some fancy font, numeric characters all take up the same space. Numbers are effectively fixed-width characters.
