Office 2021: What is the best practice for numbering equations?




The recommended method for inserting equations involves creating a table with 3 columns and 1 row, typing the equation in the middle column, and placing the equation number in the third column, as shown in the screenshots.
I have two issues:

1. How to AUTOMATICALLY add brackets to the equation number?
2. How to get the label AUTOMATICALLY typed when making a cross-reference?

Correct. But this one is more comprehensive. However, I couldn’t manage to follow the instructions provided in the previously posted threads. It looks confusing to me.


What I'm looking for is an easy approach to insert a caption that represents the equation number, without having the word “Equation” written. The number should be in brackets, and the word “Equation” should be typed automatically when the caption is called with the cross-reference.

You can't. The only method is to edit the SEQ field to include the numeric formatting switch and then save it as an autotext, as explained previously by Stefan Blom.

2. How to get the label AUTOMATICALLY typed when making a cross-reference?

Again, you can't. Cross-references work by placing a hidden bookmark around the text to be referenced. If you reference a caption that does not include the label there is no possibility of the label appearing in the cross-reference. It can't include text that isn't there.
