Hi all,
I have, as usual, labeled my figures using right-click - Insert label, and then created a list of figures. As you can see, all of a sudden some figures show up double and triple, some labels (like #7 here) are simply skipped, while yet other numbers are not chronological or duplicated. What the hell is going on here?! And how can I fix this mess? I'm using Word on Mac if that helps. I would be insanely grateful to you guys if someone could point me in the right direction. I'm really starting to get desperate!!! |

Word lays out content in a logical order but it appears you don't structure your content in a regular way. Are you placing these captions inline or using floating text boxes to arrange your pages?
We can't see what is going on from a screenshot but I can see that: 1. You have Abbildung 3 and 4 in the same paragraph 2. You probably have tracked revisions and have deleted a few captions which are still 'in the document' which is probably why you skip some numbers. 3. You don't appear to have refreshed your captions. When done correctly, captions use a Seq field to provide the incrementing number and those fields need to be updated manually if their numbers don't appear correct. I'm guessing on the strange order but if you have already updated the fields then I would be looking at where the anchors for those floating boxes are located.

Hi,
thanks for your response! I will try to answer to your points - Yes, I am using floating text boxes, because that is what word is automatically creating when I label the figures. 1. No, they are not in the same paragraph. Actually, they are on different pages. 2. Tracked revision - no, deleted captions - yes. How can I find them? 3. I did refresh the captions, but the numbers remained wrong. Does that help? I don't know how to go from here or how to structure my content in a more regular manner. |

OK, try to avoid floating boxes as much as possible. If you use a two column table with no borders you can achieve the same layout without the complication of floating objects.
If you stick with floating objects, look at where the anchors for each floating object are located. I would expect the caption numbers to reflect the position of the anchor. Use the Review tab (or whatever it is called in German) to review your tracked revisions or "Accept all changes" Then update the fields again. You can also toggle the field codes to see how they are coded. On Windows you can do this by right clicking on a field and choosing it but you can also select is and press Shift-F9. I don't know the equivalent on a Mac but it is likely to be similar.

Thank you so much! For some reason, accepting all changes in the review tab and updating all fields after wards resolved the duplicating issue for me.
Thank you so much, you saved me and my thesis! :-) |
