How to Disable TOC1 Leader Dots & Page Numbers?
Fellow Forum Members,
I need my Word365 autogenerated Table of Contents to display all TOC1 Style hyperlinks as: "CHAPTER 1 - Bla Bla" And not as "CHAPTER 1 - Bla Bla..........1-1" So in the STYLES panel I right click on the TOC 1 Style followed by a "MODIFY" menu selection. I see that the control for the Leader Dots to disappear resides within the Format->Tabs dialog window. So that I understand. However, what I do not understand is where Word365 is hiding the the ability to disable the "1-1" (Chapter-Page Number) information so that every time I perform an "Update entire table" operation on my Table of Contents all TOC1 Style hyperlinks do not appear with Leader Dots and "1-1" info? Currently I have to manually delete all Leader Dots and "1-1" info from all TOC1 hyperlinks every time I perform an "Update entire table" operation. This is something I want to stop doing. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. |

Do not use the TOC on the References Tab. Instead, on the Insert Tab, go to Quick Parts and choose Fields.
Choose the TOC field and click on the button. Choose the relevant options including unchecking page numbers which will eliminate the dot leader. |

Charles' suggestion will remove page numbers from all TOC levels.
If you want to not show page numbers on TOC1 only then you should edit the field code directly. To do this, Select the entire TOC and press Shift-F9 to show its field code. It should look something like the following couple of examples {TOC \o "1-3" \h} {TOC \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,Heading 3,3" \h \z} To remove the page numbers for just the TOC1 paragraphs you need to include a switch which looks like \n "1-1" So in the first couple of examples the code would change to {TOC \o "1-3" \n "1-1" \h} {TOC \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,Heading 3,3" \n "1-1" \h \z} Once you've done this, press F9 to update the field.

Andrew is correct. The link I gave to Suzanne's page gives most of the tweaks.
The thing is that the way the entries look is controlled by the TOC styles. Those can be edited directly. |

Solved
Fellow Forum Members,
Thank you to all for the posts. Andrew you hit the nail squarely on the head. I just wanted to delete the Heading1 leader dots and Chapter/Page number info. In contrast, the "Table of Contents" dialog window approach Charles proposes eliminates it for all Heading levels which is what I do need to happen. However, it would be cool if in a future WORD release Microsoft could do a GUI redesign of the TOC dialog window so it gives the user the ability to change a specific Heading level and not all Heading levels at the same time. The screen capture below shows the actual changes I made to the code and it works perfectly. After I perform a TOC "Update Entire Table" operation the Heading1 Level appears with no leader dots and Chapter/Page number info which is exactly what I need. TOC.jpg Thank you for your help with this matter which can now be considered solved. |

You can post suggestions to UserVoice Word for Windows. No one here has influence over future design.
That said, you can save your customized field to the Table of Contents gallery by selecting it and under Table of Contents in References tell Word to save it. |
