If the numbering is all part of an outline then there is a xref type to insert the xref number 'in full context' which will bring all the parts together in a single xref pointing at the 'ii' paragraph. This brings all parts of the tree in for you.

This is the \w switch which you would see if you viewed the field code after adding the xref. You can adjust an existing xref by changing the switch option to this.

If this is not working for you then perhaps your numbering is not set to a single outline list.
