issues with cross-referencing
I am writing my thesis and it is almost complete but have started to have trouble with captions and cross-referencing that have been working fine all year. There are several issues.
a) captions appear in text and seem to be fine BUT are not present in the table of contents, nor the document map, nor in the list for cross-references. It is not consistent across all three, so figure 13 for instance might appear in one or the other. Yes, I have updated everything (entire fields etc) and yes, I have tried reinserting - neither of which work. It is the same for both Figures and Tables. b) If I delete a caption (in utter frustration and resolved to try again) it works sometimes. However, in other places I am left with a blue frame which, when I try to delete it, gives me the message 'The section is marked as deleted text'. c) cross-references that have worked in the past are now disappearing from the cross-reference list, and this morning, all my tables in the cross-reference list appear as doubles. So it looks like Table 1 xyz Table 1 xyz Table 3 abc Table 3 abce |

Hi khaines,
Can you post an extract of the document, sufficient to demonstrate the problems?

Mmm, I tried copying part of it into a new document but referencing worked perfectly! Am reluctant to put entire thesis up as an example. Maybe I should just recopy the whole thing into a new document. Will try that!
Someone showed me how to delete hidden metadata and that has helped to a certain degree. I think it's just such a big document 120,000 words with lots of tables and figures and no doubt mega-deletions etc that somewhere along the line the referencing system has given up the ghost! Thanks |

Hi khaines,
If you've got change-tracking active in your document, that can mess around with cross-referencing (and a bunch of other things too). In that case, try accepting all changes, then turning off change-tracking, followed by Ctrl-A, then F9 to update everything in the body of the document. Even if you haven't had change-tracking on, Ctrl-A, then F9 may resolve the issue.

Wow - this is miraculous. Thank you so much. So simple. And SOOOOO helpful!
The only issue I have now, and this is minor, is that in the document map I still can't see some of the tables and figures eg. Can see fig 1-5 and then 6-14 are missing and then back to fig 15-17 a few chapters on. A few tables are missing similarly. Any clues? |

Hi khaines,
Without seeing an extract of the document, sufficient to demonstrate the problems, it's difficult to say what the cause is.

I was wondering if you knew of the reason why track changes messes this up or if there was a way of fixing the issue without the need to accept all changes? Thanks Mick |

With 'Track Changes' on, Word may have some nominally-deleted entries that it still has to keep tabs on. Consequently, the reference number assigned to those objects remains in-use. Given their nominally-deleted status, neither those items nor their tags should be displayed.
Re your question, you could accept/reject just those parts of the changes affecting the tags.
