Hello Everyone,
I have been asked to design a new wording sequence for a previously used template. The spacing is apparently set for "0"pt but it is in reality set at "12"pt. I have tried everything to change this but it will not change. Is there a way to change this, apart from starting from scratch, which will not be possible as there are borders set which I cannot copy! Thank you, Colin Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 01-26-2018 at 06:31 PM. Reason: Mark as solved |

It is certainly possible.

Hello Charles,
Thank you for your interest and reply. There are actually 2 main problems. The original template shows descending groups of names. The top group has two columns. The second has three ad he last has two. The second one is the problem, for whatever reason it will not allow replacement names to be entered. For example - say the name is John Richard Bloggs. I manage to enter John and Richard but as soon as I get to the 'o' of Bloggs, the rest of the word is placed below the first two already entered. The second problem is that of a numbered agenda. The space between lines, when highlighted and checked, is shown to be 0 pt. but it is really 12 pt. I am not able to create a list in a new agenda and have the next line immediately below the first, as in a normal paragraph. All appear as if they are the start of a new paragraph, to much space is given. I have saved the link and will study it in more detail, there is a lot of info there for my aged brain to 'take in'! Colin, I would hazard to guess that my brain is older than yours. While the whole web page is lengthy, the part on showing formatting is not.
You also need to have your rulers displayed. |

Hello Charles,
Regarding your comments on older brains' longevity, I would hesitate to argue the point, mine being only a pre-war version from '39! I looked at and even tested out the instruction of the format that you recommended on the particular template in question. Strangely, it shows all the details that I had discovered by "normal" means - highlighting and seeing the font and size in the window of the document etc. - but it didn't answer my query. I have no idea why the words that I added changed their location and appeared beneath the ones already typed instead of in a continual line. My thought is that maybe ‘Columns’ had been inserted but this did not show on the form appearing after ‘Shift+F1.’ Neither was I able to discover why in the design of the page it showed as “0” pt and clearly was not, as it had a space equivalent to 12 pt, that which would be used to denominate a new paragraph. In a “normal” paragraph, the following line of text would be expected to follow directly beneath that above it, not at the space which designates a paragraph! I shall continue to ‘play’ with this template and would hope that, sometime this year, I might achieve a solution! Regards Colin. |

If you care to attach a sample, I or someone else will take a look at it for you. See How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum.
My brain is also prewar, but a different, later, war. ![]() |

Hello Charles,
Thank you for your reply and the offer. With the greatest respect, and I really mean that, I am not able to do a screenshot for you. The subject matter is a little private and contains names, dates and details that are not for public release. I think I am near to a solution, if I continue what I am doing and if it is successful, I shall outline what I did and post it here! I would like to think that it will save some other poor person hours of trial and failures! I hope this is completed sometime tomorrow, I must 'cease and desist' for now, my "brain hurts"! Regards, Colin. |

Hello Charles,
For some reason, the problem is resolved! I have done something, which I have no idea about, that has solved the problem. Here is what I did. The template is a Landscape design with one side being the front and back cover and the other side containing the details. My problem was with the part containing the details. Having no success working on the original template, I copied and pasted all the details on the left side inner page and entered them on a new Word Document. There being quite a lot of names to copy down, I chose to use Ariel Narrow in size 10. I set the space ‘Before’ and ‘After’ to “0” The first group at the top was in two columns – not designed as actual columns but details on a line with each name –Eg:- BILL BLOGGS Floor Sweeper With a list of 12 names, they only required to be spaced out on the line – this did not present a problem. The second group likewise was no problem, being a list of only five names. The main problem had been with the next, the third group, this contained a list of three columns with five names in each column. Short History. Working on the original template I was not able to get the first name of the second column typed in on the same line as the first name of the first column, it continually ended up as the second name of the first column. So I typed the names of the first column beneath each other. Now, when I tried to type the first name of the second column alongside that first name of the first column, it would jump beneath the first name of the first column. This is when I came to this Forum to try to find out the way to overcome the problem! So, to continue with what I have done – I had no problem copying and pasting all the names and when I tried to arrange them in proper columns it was fairly simple. Some names had gone into the next line, but on reducing the spacing and bringing the names closer together they finally appeared in their correct three columns. Now came the big test. I copied them in bulk and pasted them on the original Template. The result was a little chaotic, similar to the previous attempt, the names were very spaced out, with some displacing those below and forming part of a new line. I repeated my efforts in bringing them closer by using the back-spacer and when they were in their correct positions, I did the same with the second line, and so on. The result was that the original template accepted the corrected lists and the whole document is now as I wanted it to be. Just as a further 'test' I attached it to an email and sent it to myself - it opened and was correct! My thanks for the advice offered and I hope that this explanation will be of help to anyone who has the same frustrating problem! Regards, Colin Last edited by colinito; 01-26-2018 at 11:16 AM.
