I replaced my old PC, because MS Word 2010 kept failing to print documents, coming up with error message:
"Now printing body".... then "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font." A while ago, at this forum I was given a few suggestions such as delete normal.dot. None worked and I was eventually told I had done something wrong to my old PC, so I bought a new PC with 8GB RAM (surely enough), 1 TB disk space (4 times more than old PC), 64-bit (vs old 32-bit). But after a couple of days, I got the above errors again. Very frustrating and expensive! I get no errors print xls, pdf, txt only word docs. It is a brand new PC, and all I did was copy over docs & files, install MS Office 2010, and Trend Micro. Any suggestions welcome. |

What happens if you do this:
Choose Insert, Object, Text from File, Select a sample document that is causing this error Then print? Does the error message still occur? |

Hi,
Thanks for reply. Interestingly it did print however: -there was a brief "Not Responding" message after I selected Print, and before I selected the page number (this happens sometimes with docs) -there was no message about margins (my docs have a number of tables) -my docs' tables were sorta corrupted ie fonts, extra gaps between lines which causing only half page printed. Hopefully this will help. Thanks, Sid |

As the problem occurs with my brand new PC, I think we can rule out something I have done with my PC.
So that leaves a bug in Word 2010, which was never there in Word 2003. It seems a problem with Margins, because in the uncommon event the error/crash doesn't occur I get a message: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?" I click Yes, and it prints ok. nb: No "Now printing body" message. However, when the error does occur, there is no such margins warning, but always "Now printing body" then "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font." Also, if I don't imemdiately close the doc, MS Word 2010 crashes, and the doc can get corrupted. The only temporary fudge fix is delete the normal.dot, and run Smart Defrag 5... but postpones next error. Also if I don't do this fudge fix, if I try to open same doc, "There is not enough memory or disk space to update the display" ... followed usually by MS Word crash. Any help much appreciated. |

http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then http://wordmvp.com/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm Do you have the correct printer driver for the operating system? Word 2010 (fully updated) is perhaps the best and most stable Word version that Microsoft has produced. It should not be automatically assumed to be responsible. Most problems are caused by problems with the user files - especially the normal template, which for word 2010 is Normal.dotM If you have not changed the default location enter or copy %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates to the address window of Windows Explorer and you will be taken to the folder that contains the default template. Note that this folder is normally hidden. An old normal.dot file from an earlier Word version in the folder will cause the new normal template to use settings from that template, especially including macros that may not be compatible with the newer version. If that is the case here, then remove the old template from the folder before allowing Word to build a new one. Set the Word option (File > Options > Advanced > Save) prompt before saving the the normal template and only save the template when you have a change that you want to retain - including the first time Word is closed after creating the new template.

Hi,
I followed instructions on what to do after MS Word 2010 crashes, and also deleting temp files, but I still get the error messages. Also I was hoping to address the cause of the printing errors (ie failure to print doc), more than the symptoms such as Word crashing. I also re-downloaded drivers, and still same print errors. http://support.brother.com/g/b/downl...30cdw_us_eu_as I also did a dir \normal.dot? /s > f.txt and it says: Directory of C:\Users\Sid\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates 25/06/2017 01:41 PM 20,465 Normal.dotm 1 File(s) 20,465 bytes so I have no normal.dot, just a single normal.dotm, which I have written a bat file to delete as required. I also tried last suggestion and still get same print error, but keep getting a message "Changes have been made that affect the global template normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes?" so I disabled it. Also sometimes I get an error when exiting: "You placed a large amount of data on the clipboard. Do you want this content to be available to other applications after you quit Word?" This seems consistent with some bug, seemingly related to margins overloading clipboard/memory, as per my previous post. One of doc's which I commonly use is 188 pages, and ~1.2MB in size. Is that too large for Word 2010? The above clipboard error indicates and I am copying/pasting large amounts which I am not. |

You want to be prompted before saving changes to the normal template.
Whether you say yes or no depends on what you want. It is important that you have the ability to reject changes being saved. Again, when you have Word create a new normal template, you will want to save it. When you have saved style and font changes or recorded macros or otherwise changed the template, you will want to save changes. When you have not deliberately made changes, you probably do not want to save changes. |

Hi Charles,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I am not technical to understand this saving vs not saving normal.dotm. Anyway, I'm not sure how (not) saving normal.dotm has any bearing on my long-standing problem of getting error message when printing: "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font." I have tried deleting normal.dotm and temp files, and I have latest printer drivers, and I never had the problem with Word 2003, and I have far more memory now - 8GB. You say my 1.2MB doc is not too large for my memory. And my clipboard is mostly empty or has small amount of text, so I fail to see there is a memory problem. Sounds like a false positive bug ie displaying an error, when no such error exists. When I don't get the memory error, I always instead get a message: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?" My margins of most large docs are: Top 0.7cm Bottom 0cm Left 1.1cm Right 1cm Are my margins too small for Word 2010? |

Also I contacted support for my printer and they said: "Using out of date or even incorrect drivers is not usually the cause of Microsoft Word crashing."
So given it is a brand new PC, and all I did was install Office 2010, printer drivers, & Trend Micro, and copied over my doc, xls, txt, pdf files, and the xls/txt/pdf files all print fine... but only docs fail to print with strange unrelated memory error, then it seems it is a bug in Office 2010. |

If no one can help me, can I assume it is a bug in Word 2010?
If so, how do I report this bug to MS, for a quick bug-fix? This is becoming increasingly desperate because my partner has a home business, and it is very embarrassing to have clients watch us print a doc for them only to get the error: "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font." This most recently happened with a 2 page doc, with small margins and no tables, and nothing in clipboard, so can't possibly be a memory problem. |

Did you check to make sure you had the latest driver and one designed for your operating system? You have several things going on here. |

If repairing Office 2010 and applying all the updates doesn't fix the issue then updating to Office 2016 is unlikely to fix it, for if anything Word 2010 makes better use of memory and is faster; and yes you do have to buy/rent the whole of the 2016 product.
Frankly it is difficult to know what the problem is. Have you tried running a memory test - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...or=-2147217396

In this situation, in order, I'd:
1. Clear out the user's temp folder (C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp) 2. Repair Office. 3. Run Office in Safe mode and, if the problem goes away, disable any 3rd-party Office addins before re-enabling them one at a time until the culprit is found. 4. Uninstall the errant fonts. 5. Reinstall the latest printer driver. 6. Run sfc /scannow 7. Uninstall, then reinstall Office 8. Reinstall Windows & all apps. checking each time whether the error has been resolved.
