What happens if you simply add a hyperlink to a new document (e.g. this page's web addrss) then press the spacebar? The default hyperlink Style is blue and underlined, so you shouldn't have to mess with it.

In a new document, the hyperlink is just as I want it. I think what happened was that some time ago I was fooling around with trying to make it also italic and I was also fooling around trying to make the hyperlinks in the Table of Contents also blue and underlined. Somehow, I must have gotten it screwed up.

How do I restore just that one style?

I tried the Organizer under Document Templates, but I can't find the Hyperlink style to copy over.

It should be present in Word's Normal Template. Assuming your document is based on that, it will be the document listed in the right-hand pane; otherwise, use the Organiser to open the Normal Template. The 'Hyperlink' Style should appear right after 'Heading 9'. There is also a 'Followed Hyperlink' Style, which Word uses to change the colour of a clicked hyperlink; that should appear right after 'Envelope Address'.

What right-hand pane?

In the Developer tab, if I click on Document Template, I get the Templates and Add-ins dialog. In the Document template field, it says "Normal".

If I click on Organizer, I get the Organizer dialog. In the Normal.dotm field, I see just 7 styles:

1. $Figure
2. Default Paragraph Font
3. Footer
4. Header
5. No List
6. Normal
7. Table Normal

And in the Styes available in: field, it says "Normal.dotm (global template)".

I didn't do enough testing when I replied to this the first time.

In a new document, if I enter a URL and press space, I get a hyperlink formatted as blue and underlined, just as you say. But if I enter a cross-reference to, say, a heading within the document, I get normal text formatting, except for the field shading, which I have set to "Always".

If I move the cursor over the URL, the style field says "Hyperlink". But if I move it over the cross-reference, it says "Normal".

So the hyperlink style appears to be fine, but somehow I have managed to change the style that is associated with cross-references. So how to I fix that?

Cross-references and hyperlinks are two entirely different things.

By default, cross-references adopt the formatting of the paragraph into which they're inserted. Hyperlinks, on the other hand, ordinarily adopt the hyperlink Style.

Just as you can insert a cross-reference to a heading, bookmark, etc., you can do the same with hyperlinks. That will get you the hyperlink formatting; the downside is that the hyperlink display text doesn't auto-update to reflect changes in whatever it's linked to. The alternative is to apply the hyperlink Style to your cross-references, so they look like hyperlinks (they still won't change colour when followed, though).

Aha. I was assuming that cross-references were a form of hyperlink and would be formatted the same way and that somehow I had screwed up the cross-references so that they were not formatted that way.

Is there any way to get Word to treat cross-references as hyperlinks or at least format them that way??

Not automatically. If that's what you really want, you should consider using hyperlinks; not cross-references. That said, a Word macro could be used to reformat your cross-references to look like hyperlinks. Even then, however, they wouldn't change colour when clicked.
