I'm using Word 2007 and I have a file that I use daily, but because it had gotten so large Word gave me that message that there are too many spelling errors so it is turning off the on the fly spelling checker. I've now reduced the size of the document, but the red underlining of misspells isn't back. Is there any way to turn it back on? Also is there a way to get Word to not do that, to not turn off the proof reading if there are many mistakes in the document?

You can take the first 100 pages and copy them to a new document and run the spell checker.
Fix any actual spelling mistakes. If something is mistakenly identified as a spelling error because it is in a different language, change the proofing language for that word or phrase to the correct language. If it is a correctly spelled word that you want always recognized as correct, add it to the dictionary. If it is a correctly spelled word that you do not want to add to the dictionary (i.e., a proper noun) mark it's proofing language to "do not check spelling or grammar." You can handle marking the proofing language for words and phrases using character styles. One you have finished that 100 pages, copy it and paste it back into your big document, replacing the original text. Go to the next 100 pages. Mastering the Spelling Checker |

The thing is its a file that I use daily for writing and I often later copy and paste stuff out of it into different files, but this is sort of my working file, it will never be a finished document. So what I need is for the automatic speeling checker (the one that works on the fly) to always be on regardless of the size of the document, OR, at least, if it must get turned off when the file gets too big then at least for it to get turned back on once I reduce the size of the file.

If you do what I just directed, you will have a document that will not trigger the "too many errors' message. The automatic spelling checker should work fine. Each time you mark a part of the text properly in the proofing language, it will no longer show up as an error.
I would also recommend that you do as much formatting using styles rather than direct formatting. That will reduce the complexity of your file tremendously. |
