I have a table, three columns, 20 rows, and each cell is independent as it's a service directory (accountants, bricklayers, contractors etc) for a community newspaper. Occasionally one drops out or I need to add a new one. Is there some way I can sort all cells alphabetically?

Have you tried the table sort tools?

Yes but it assumes you want to keep rows intact. You can't sort individual cells.

I don't have the right sort of content to check this at the moment, but how about copy/pasting the table into a spreadsheet and using the spreadsheet data sort tools to sort a single column? then copy/paste back into Word and see whether the table survives the journey.

Why would you want to sort an individual cell? Or do you mean each cell's data are unrelated to other cells on the same row? If it's the latter, you should use a single-column table in a three-column page layout. That way, you can sort the table and insert/delete cells at will and have the table re-organise itself to take account of the edits.
