Prevent new page when adding new Heading
Hi
I’m creating a doc from a Word Template that has been setup by a third party. The template is such that every main heading starts on new page. In other words, Heading 1 will start on Page 1, but as soon as I type “2. New Heading”, this sections starts on a new page and is formatted the same as how Heading 1 is defined to be. And when I type “3. XX “ that also starts a new page and so on. I do not want every new numbered heading to start on a new page. I still would like to formatting to apply (Font, Size + Bold), but it should just continue below the previous points. Typing a backspace before the section also removes the formatting, and then the TOC is not correct. |

Evidently, the Heading Style you're using has the 'page break before' paragraph attribute set. Simply uncheck that in the Style's paragraph formatting options.

Thanks. It might be stupid question but how do I know which Heading Style to edit? Since it is a template, I'm not applying a style myself - just using the ones there is. And when I put the cursor on the heading, no Heading Style in the Ribbon is highlighted. Are there a way to see which style is applied?

A Quick & dirty way is to modify one of the affected paragraphs, then right-click on it and choose Styles>Update XXXX to match selection. Doing that will both update the Style and tell you its name (XXXX).

Not a stupid question. Click the arrow at the right end of the QAT (Quick Access Toolbar) and set the option to show below ribbon (where there is more room for it).
Click again and select 'More Commands'. From the Popular Commands group add 'Style' and 'Styles...' to the toolbar. The latter will indicate the style at the cursor. The other will provide ease of access for you to edit it.

Ok, I'm having the same problem. I'm using Word 2013, and I had no trouble finding the "page break before" paragraph setting for style "Heading 1"... but it was already unchecked. I checked it and saved, unchecked it and saved, no change. I noticed that style "Heading 1" is based on style "Heading" which is based on style "Standard", but both of those also have "page break before" unchecked. Can anyone suggest what I might be overlooking?

A general formatting for heading styles is "keep with next." You want to keep this setting unless you are doing very unusual writing.
However, if the following paragraph is formatted to "keep lines together" you can pull everything onto the next page. |
