Cannot open DOC email attachment will only save as DOCx which I also cannot open

I am running word 2010. I cannot open a DOC attachment and can only save this as DOCX not Word 97-2003 document so cannot open it by saving. Something is wrong with my system but I have no idea what. Can you help?
