I'm using Microsoft Word 2013 on Windows 7 64-bit
Okay so I'm working to update a template, and I'm have a question regarding cross-references. My boss would like us to use the "Chapter" style, not the Heading 1 style for our chapter headings. Fine. But every once in a blue moon we have to cross-reference to a chapter heading. I'm writing up the section in our template about how to add a cross-reference to a chapter heading. This is what I have so far: To create cross-references for Chapter and Appendix styles:
The problem is that when I finally do click the insert button, the cross reference is inserted with Chapter formatting or Appendix formatting, not the formatting of the paragraph that I'm inserting the cross reference into. So for example, if I want to insert a cross reference to a bookmarked Chapter style heading in a Body paragraph, I use the steps above, and it makes that whole Body paragraph a Chapter style paragraph. I know that you can manually right-click the field, click Edit, and check the Preserve Formatting During Updates box and then change the style back to Body. But is there a way I can stop this from happening in the first place?? Thanks, Kate |

What you describe suggests that the headings include direct font formatting, that is, that people format headings using the controls in the Font group on the Home tab, instead of modifying the styles via the Modify Style dialog box.

I double-checked and no, we're using the styles just as we normally would. Highlight the text and click the style to apply it. I tried clearing formatting from the chapter heading, and reapplying the style, and that also did not work.

Strange. Can you share an example document? Note that you don't have to post a document with any meaningful content, as long as it illustrates the problem.

Okay I attached a template I'm working on for our office so there's nothing sensitive in this haha.
When you open it, you'll see the chapter heading first thing, and then the second "repeat" of that chapter is the cross-reference to the bookmark. Maybe I'm making these bookmarks wrong? Idk it's frustrating the crap out of me haha. Thank you so much for look at this ![]() |

The problem is that you have included the paragraph break in the bookmark. Consequently, any cross-reference to the bookmark will pick up the paragraph mark, with its formatting.
