Mind you, consider your users and editors: it's not going to be easy to read a text where you have lots of highlighted single-letter corrections. |

But that will still leave you with a whole word replaced via the initial change; and the second one won't be recorded as a discrete change at all unless you save the document between edits.

That would be tracked as two separate changes, each accounting for a single character. I don't know that that's an improvement (let the OP decide) as the procedure is more convoluted to implement and leaves you with two changes to accept/reject instead of one.
