In one document with caption numbering set to 1,2,3 the captions for one chapter have 'f' instead of '6' while all other chapters use numbers as specified. Same issue in the list of tables

That suggests the caption with 'f' has had 'alphabetic' numbering applied. To fix it, select the caption, press Shift-F9 and delete the '\* alphabetic' string from the field. Then press F9 to update.

Thanks - I checked the caption and it has '\* ARABIC' exactly like the captions in other chapters which behave as expected - could there be a corruption in the file?

What happens if you select the offending caption and press F9?

Nothing happens!!

.. and if I delete the caption and introduce a new one, the same thing happens, 'f' instead of '6' and only in that chapter, and the same for both table captions and figure captions - but the Chapter 6 Headings at all levels behave properly, with the number '6'

Try deleting '\* ARABIC' from the caption.

Makes no difference deleting and creating a new caption - any captions in this one chapter offend in this way - but since only five captions in all are involved, I have done a manual correction, so it's not a crisis - but it does seem a mystery!
