This is a relatively insignificant glitch, but for my current project it's very aggravating.
I'm using Word 2008 on a Mac. For most of my documents, no matter how long they are, a live word count appears at the bottom of the document window, with the current position of the cursor and total word count shown. But in a few cases, it's missing. I can select tools>word count for the total, but that doesn't show me the word-count position of the cursor. When I check Word>preferences>view>window, live word count is checked. I'm stumped. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. |

On a PC, at least, Word's 'live' count has never shown the word count at a particular position, only of a particular selection. I suspect Macs are the same.

Macs are not the same, because on many of my .docs, I can read the current position of the cursor in relation to the total page count of the document. The first number changes accordingly as I move the cursor. I have attached a screenshot to illustrate.
The problem I'm trying to solve is that in some documents, the word count window at the bottom of the document is completely missing. The question is if there is a way to get it back. |

OK, well it wouldn't work if the insertion point is anywhere other than in the body of the document (eg header, footnote, textbox), or if you had a shape object, etc selected. It may also be unavailable in fields (eg tables of contents, cross-references).
