If the macros are in Normal.dotm, you don't need them to be in the document; the macros will be accessible whenever Word is open.

That's what I figured but it isn't working. I copied my normal.dotm from my desktop (that has the macros embedded), opened it on the mac probutt he macros are not there.Do I have to install the macros themselves in the Word version on the laptop?

Where to did you copy the Normal template? Placing a renamed copy of the file in the Startup folder (to find the location of that folder, look in the File Locations dialog box) should make the macros globally available. (I'm assuming that MacWord works the same as WinWord in this respect.)

Does that mean you are replacing the Normal file already in that folder (Word always has a file named "Normal")?

Tried both renaming the file that was in User Templates and overwriting the existing file. Neither worked.

Replacing the Normal file isn't recommended, but adding to the Startup folder should definitely work. The assumption is that the file added is a macro-enabled template.
