Default Word 2003: How can I get paste unformatted text to preserve table cells' content format?

I create a table and set cell #1 para format. Then (DOC attached) copy some lines and paste Unformatted into multiple cells :

I expect para format preserved, but it is lost:

Why? And what do you suggest as a workaround?

Paste to a single cell works as expected.
