Even where a given Microsoft Office application has been installed correctly, if it hasn't been kept up to date, it may exhibit erroneous behaviour due to faults that might develop over time, due to interactions with third-party addins, etc. Even when neither of those apply, patches might be needed to maintain compatibility with later versions. Conversely, later versions may handle files created by earlier versions differently than the earlier versions did. Whether that is a problem depends on what the changes are and how their impact is perceived by the file owners/users.

Thank you very much for educating me on this issue. I'm beginning to wonder what it is I would be testing and think that I may pass on this opportunity b/c it is not clear to me what I would be doing.
