Thanks for your reply. The explanation of the problem may be complicated by the fact that my definitions of the words 'chapter' and 'section' may differ from those of Microsoft.

So far as I understand it, one needs to make a new section (MS definition) in order to change the page orientation and another to change it back. Therefore, the sections (MS) are no longer analogous to the subject chapters. The problem comes from the fact that my page numbering system has been set up as Page x of y SectionPages, designed to show the total number of pages in the chapter.

Maybe there's a way of defining a 'chapter' within Word. I'll have a look along that path.
