Default Word 2010 changes document

Apologies if this has been covered previously but I'm new, this is my first post. The problem is that I have set the defaults that I want for the normal template and when I create a document, it looks fine. However, when I save and close it and then re-open, it looks different. The main issue is the top, sometimes its so much lower that the whole thing looks silly.

If I save it in an older version, it keeps its shape but the computer doesn't like opening it. It does, but makes a noise and comes up with 'there was a problem sending the command to the program'.

I think one issue might be I'm saving wrong. I have just installed Office 2010 and when I save I can't find anything in the list that says 2010 so I've been saving it under works 6-9 document, is this the right one? It's driving me mad!
