I am using SEQ chapter \c to quote the chapter number at the top of each page. But if a new chapter starts on that page I am getting the number of the new chapter rather than the current one which is not what I want.
Please can someone help?!

At first I started a new section for each chapter and quoted the section number as the chapter number in the header. That worked fine... But then I introduced footnotes and Word started insisting on starting a new page for each section...
A solution to that problem would also give me a fix for my problem!

This was a known bug in Office 2003/07, but I didn't think it persisted into 2010. Try changing compatibility options to lay out footnotes like Word 6.x and see if that resolves your issue.

Actually, even in Word 2010, a page break is forced if two footnotes are separated by a continuous section break. If you select the "Lay out footnotes the way Word 6.x/95/97 does" compatibility option, Word may still move the footnote (even if it doesn't "convert" the section break).

Yes, I see - thank you. What I don't understand is that the page break seems to be forced even if I pick the footnote option to number by page rather than by section.

I'm guessing it's a design choice to prevent the same footnote number from appearing twice on the same page, which could otherwise happen with a continuous section break and footnotes restarting on each section.

Yes, that makes sense when numbering footnotes by section. But what I was trying to say is that it also happens when I pick the option to number footnotes by page. That's what doesn't make sense to me.

I agree that it doesn't really makes sense, but I still believe that it is the explanation.
