Many thanks for your patience folks and thanks for pushing me to look further. The 'more intuitive Word 2010' has an 'insert' button which brings up just 'page break'. It is the 'page layout button' that brings up a selection of 'breaks', including 'page', 'next page' etc. I had to switch on the formatting symbol to see where I was going, but at last I have my document with both formats in it. Thanks again.
