If you make a copy of the template, then use the macro recorder to record exactly what it is you're protecting, Word will produce some vba code that reflects that. The recorded code will likely have a lot of stuff you're not interested in, but if you could post the relevant portions of the recorded code, I can probably give you back something you can use in the original template.
