You can't do any playing around with 'Show Footnotes' in anything OTHER than Draft view, because the 'Show Footnotes' icon is DISABLED in all the other views (Print Layout, Web Layout and Outline).
You gave to be in DRAFT view for 'Show Footnotes' to be enabled. That's a given. Cheers
