Default Help - alternating headers, page numbers, starting on P.4...

Hello,

I've been having a brutal time trying to get my headers and page numbers set up. Please help, if you can.

Here's what I'm trying to to:
1) Left page header - Title
2) Right page header - Author name
3) Every page footer - page number

I can get the headers the way I want, by checking "Different Odd and Even Pages", however, when I try to put in page numbers, they only show up on even or odd pages, but not both.

Here is some more context, if it matters. Each chapter is a section (I've inserted section breaks (Page Break -> Even Page) so that the book will have new chapters starting on right pages only.

I unlinked the first and second sections (by clicking Link to Previous), so that I could have page numbers start in section two, because the first section is title, table of contents, etc. If I *only* try putting in page numbers, I can get them to work - starting with "1" in the second section.

But again, if I also try to add alternating headers, it all falls apart.

Please help! Is there any way to have these three things at once?

If there is no way to do this, I could also accept this option -- left header with title on the left and page number on the right, and right header with author ont he left and page number on the right. But I'd prefer the first version.

Any ideas? I've tried so many options so far... I could use a hand!

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

It's probably easiest to set up the structure you want if you:
• configure every Section with 'different first page' and 'different odd & even' layout.
• unlink only Section 2's headers and footers (3 of each) from Section 1's headers and footers. To unlink all 3, you'll need to have at least (temporarily) 3 pages in Section 2.
• make sure all subsequent Sections headers and footers have the 'same as previous' setting (3 of each per Section).
• insert the 3 page headers for Section 2.
• insert the page # field in the first page footer of Section 2 and format it to start from 1.
• insert a page # field in each of the other page footers of Section 2.
• check that the first page footer of Section 3 doesn't re-start numbering at 1; if it does, format it to 'continue from previous Section'.

See attached document for how it should end up.

Default Same problem with headers/footers

Hello! I stumbled across this post as I was researching the same problem, and I can't seem to make it work out. I want different headers (my name on evens and my book title on odds) with consistent page numbers starting from the second page of chapter one. I used section breaks for each chapter so that the first page of each chapter would be unique (no page number or header).

Now when I set up the headers just how I want them, the pages numbers are only showing up on odd pages! I've done as much as I could, and no success. The previous instructions were very confusing to me. I will need a more simplified description of what to do. This isn't my forte! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will have to insert page numbers in the even header (or footer) as well. The easiest way is to click in the header and press Alt+Shift+P. Select "Different first page" on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab (on the ribbon) to omit the first page header in a given section. For more, take a look at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting...atter_2007.htm.
