Default Getting rid of separate "Doc 1"

Hope someone can solve this. Until today, whenever I opened WORD (I have 2007 version), "Doc 1" would appear by default. Then, if I didn't want to do a new doc. but see an old one, I'd click on Open and bring the desired document up. This doc would remove "Doc 1" from my screen.

But I must have hit some button by mistake today. Because now, when I open WORD, Doc 1 will still appear. But when I open an existing document, Doc 1 REMAINS. This means that when I'm ready to exit WORD, I always have to cancel out Doc 1 too, even though it's blank--an annoying extra step.

Can anyone tell me how to return to having Doc 1 disappear whenever I start up WORD and open an existing document? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Art,

That's a side-effect of checking the 'Show all windows in the Taskbar' option (see under Word options|Advanced > Display).

Default Thanks, Paul . . . but . . .

Hi Paul,

Appreciate your taking the time to respond. I did what you said, but it didn't work. It did change the situation. Before, when I opened Word, Document1 would come up, and it would stay there in the Taskbar when I opened an existing document.

Now, Document1 disappears from the Taskbar when I open an existing document (just as always). But when I close the existing document, Document1 is still there, and I still have to exit it.

Do you have any other suggestions. Again, I appreciate your kindness.

Best,
Art

Hi Art,

Did you close & re-start Word? The only other reason for 'Document 1' remaining active until you exit Word is that you've done something to 'edit' it before opening another document. That could be anything as simple at hitting the space bar or enter key. In that case, you'd also bet getting a propmpt before exiting Word/closing 'Document 1' asking if you wanted to save the changes.

Thanks again. Yes, I'd noticed I'd inadvertently "added" something to Doc1, so I undid that, then saved all the undoing as Doc1. But it hasn't helped. Now I'm finding something even stranger as a result.

Previously when I closed my existing Document, Document 1 would then reappear. But now (that I cleared everything off of Document 1 and saved it), when I try to close out of it, yes, it does still ask me if I want to save it. But when I say yes, just to see what happens, in the Save Box it's called Doc2.

And yes, I have exited Word and re-started it every time.

If you have any more suggestions, please let me know. If not, I understand and I'll keep exploring. It's an inconvenience to have Document 1 remain, but not a major one.

Once again, my thanks for your kindness.

Art

Hi Art,

With the 'Show all windows in the Taskbar' option, that's normal - and its name gets changed to 'Document 2'. Don't ask me why.

Why did you do anything to it? If your default document has something extraneous on it when it loads, you need to clear it from the Normal template. Editing and saving 'Document1' isn't going to fix the problem. All that will do is put a document named 'Document1' on your disk.

If you've already saved it, or if you had simply left it alone, I can't see why that would happen. Do you have any macros or addins that run when you start Word?

Default Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions, and taking the time.

I'd like to try what you suggest, but I can't locate where my templates are. I know there's a "normal" doc. in there, I've seen it. But now I don't know how to get to it. Could you let me know?

I see you're in Canberra. I'm a Yank, live in Salt Lake City, Utah now. But I lived in Australia from 1971 to 1978--mostly Sydney but also Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide. Worked for Angus & Robertson. Loved living there, everyone was great (or as you say, bonza).

Will be thinking of you all on the One Day of the Year next week.

Art

Hi Art,

You should be able to find where the 'Normal' template is stored via Word Options|Advanced > File locations > User templates.

You should be able to the edit the 'Normal' template via Open > 'All Word templates' (for the file types) and navigating to the 'User templates' folder.
