Sorry, I just read your note re: setting Outlook to automatic send/receive mode. I'm not sure what version you have, but I'm using Outlook 2002. I think the options may be similar to Outlook 2003, but I'm not for sure.
To set Outlook to automatically send/receive, select "Tools" and "Options" from the menu. Click the "Mail Setup" tab in the Options dialog box. Check "Send immediately when connected" under "Send/Receive."
You can further double-check that the options are setup correctly in the dialog box by clicking the "Send/Receive" button. This opens the "Send/Receive Groups" dialog box. Click the "Edit" button to view your options. Your account should be selected on the left under "Accounts." Both "Send mail items" and "Receive mail items" should be checked.
Click "OK" to close the dialog boxes. This should hopefully do the trick.
