Yes, that would indicate it isn't an addin.
I don't have any exciting news that will solve your problem from Word. It would appear that the OLE action knows the file is acrobat so it gets passed to Acrobat Reader for opening in Word. If extracting the file to windows allows you to open it then you are going to need to use that pathway.
