I am asking you about the problem I have with Word because it does not open links when they have an extension it does not know.
I sometimes receive pdf files that my favourite reader does not open and in those cases I open them with another reader and to differentiate those files I change the extension to pdf1 so that the other program opens them. In Windows it works fine. The problem is when I place a link inside a Word file to pdf1 because I get a warning that it cannot be opened because there is no associated program, when this is not the case. How can I solve it? Thanks |

You should fix the problem at the source. Correct whatever fault is causing your system to not open all PDF files.

In source pdf and pdf1 open perfectly.
What I am looking for is that the links in Word to pdf1 open in the same way as when I do it directly. So there is no system failure but something internal to Word |

Does any of this info help you customise your system?

Hi Guessed
Thanks, but that is what I have done. In default applications by file type I have pdf and pdf1 set up and it works correctly except when a link within Word directs to a pdf1 extension as it does not open and I get a warning that there is no designated program. However, if I configure pdf1 to open with notepad, the link in Word opens correctly but if I configure Windows to open with adobe reader then it comes out that there is no program assigned when it is not correct. So the problem is Word because the Windows configuration is correct and I can't figure out how to fix it and that's why I'm asking in the forum. |

Do you have a third-party addin in Word that might be sticking its nose in when opening PDFs?
Natively, recent versions of Word can open/convert PDFs but addins such as Adobe's PDFMaker and Nuance PowerPDF tend to hijack the open/convert process that might otherwise occur.

No, I have never installed any add-on but maybe it is necessary to install one in order to get it to open links even if it does not recognize the extension since Windows does recognize it and opens it without problems.
What do you think, is there an add-on that can solve this problem? |

To be sure this is a problem with your Word program, itself, try starting in safe mode. Then use File Open to open your file with the links and try using one. Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC - Microsoft Office |

I have done it.
I opened a Word in safe mode and created there a link to pdf1 file and it shows the same warning that there is no program assigned. Then I created the link in normal mode and opened it in safe mode and it could not open it either. It shows the same warning. Does the fact that the same thing happened in safe mode mean that the problem is not due to an add-on? |

Yes, that would indicate it isn't an addin.
I don't have any exciting news that will solve your problem from Word. It would appear that the OLE action knows the file is acrobat so it gets passed to Acrobat Reader for opening in Word. If extracting the file to windows allows you to open it then you are going to need to use that pathway.

Ok, I will have to do as you say.
What happens is that it is more comfortable that the link opens directly. Well, thank you very much for your help. |

Did you try right clicking the embedded file and choosing Properties? You can assign an application to the embedded file in that dialog.

Well, the right click and then Properties is not valid in the link inside Word but I have done that in the file and configured which program I wanted to open it and it works perfectly.
The problem is that I can not open it from the link as it comes out that there is no program assigned for that file and it seems that there is no solution. |

I'm not able to duplicate your problem using Win 11 and Word 2021. When I create a link in Word with a pdf1 file extension, I'm first asked if I want to open it, and if I say yes, then a OS dialog box opens up that shows a list of installed programs. I can choose Acrobat, and it opens. I did not do any file association beforehand.
