Do you have a third-party addin in Word that might be sticking its nose in when opening PDFs?
Natively, recent versions of Word can open/convert PDFs but addins such as Adobe's PDFMaker and Nuance PowerPDF tend to hijack the open/convert process that might otherwise occur.
