You can make the brackets part of the SEQ field that Word uses for captions. It will then be included as you create the cross-reference.

The screen shot below illustrates how it can be done. Construct a SEQ field with the \# field. In the string that follows the switch, # represents the SEQ/caption number and the static text is the rest of the instruction.

For easy reuse, save the whole field as an AutoText entry.
