Thanks for the link to Suzanne's tip page WordUser789. More knowledge is never a bad thing. In this particular case I'm not sure that the \w switch is truly a fix for the Jason tab issue but if it works for you then that is great. The Jason tab is rarely an issue except on either very short TOC paragraphs or very long ones which wrap to a second line. So it isn't something that becomes apparent in many documents.

In my case it’s the very short lines that were a problem: adding /w made the extra tab disappear. This thread has been really helpful as it’s a problem that’s always irritated me and i’d assumed it was due to a hanging indent being larger than the heading length or something. Hanging indents are one of those things that 15 years into this career i still have to play around with until it looks right so i assumed i was just overlooking something. Doesn’t help that Word and PPT do them differently!
