I really like how scientific journals are organised in terms of in-text citations and references (see example below). Where something like APA style used. A simple number after text which looks (blue) and acts as a hyper link.

I assume the journals are written in MS Word and exported to PDFs.


I found that within Word the function insert Endnote does something similar. It adds a superscript number which acts in a similar way. Which is great.



But is there a way to make it blue (as a hyperlink) so it stands out?

Are you aware of the referencing tools available within Word?

If you are using Endnotes, you could change the Endnote Reference Style to blue.

I am aware, but have not used them much. Frankly it's only for personal use, so the metadata in the reference it's not extensive and does not need to follow format. For academic writing, I usually resort to reference managers. But for personal use, I might have an 80 page technical knowledge document. It's not even for navigation purposes across document sections where I could use bookmarks. Mostly I utilise headings, and sometimes I use bookmarks to link content within document.

It's usually when I have external supporting information or source on the topic which further expands on the topic. So instead putting the links in text. It's neater to just add nicely visible numbered hyperlink in-text to a reference which is at the end of the document. I don't opt for cross references for this purpose, as it it too manual just for a quick reference when an endnote could do this.

How do you change the colour of the endnote (of the in-text number really). All I could find in the options was the style of numbering. But did not see options regarding font size and colour. Probably did not look in the right place.

The style is "Endnote Reference." You may want to make it a bit larger as well.
