Default Word 2007 - Help - How to Bulk Copy Hyperlinks

Thanks for considering this...

How (if possible) can one perform a 'replace all' type function whereby the 'Find What' is e.g. "It" and the 'Replace With' is "It" which is hyperlink enabled - I'm hoping to save much time copying / pasting the hyperlinked word through a large document e.g. word = "It" which hyperlinks to bookmark "It" in a 3000 page document so you can imagine how many "It" exists in that scenario...

Thanks for considering

I would do this by creating one instance of the It which is hyperlinked and then copy that to the clipboard.

Then you use Find/replace and put ^c in the Replace with box. This will then replace all found instances with the contents of the clipboard ie. the text with the hyperlink.

Thumbs up

Guessed - your method works like a charm but for the fact it also replaces the bookmarked word too therefore all changed hyperlinks have nowhere they call home...thoughts?

You can reinstate a bookmark by just creating it again. The hyperlinks can't tell the difference and will update to point at the newly re-created bookmark.

A second alternative is to select the area you want the replacements to happen in (excluding the one you want preserved) and replace only in the selection.

A third alternative is to put the bookmarked item into a locked content control (or group it) to effectively insulate it from any accidental updates or replacements.

Thanx again Guessed … reinstatement might be the most efficient way for me and I’ll research ‘content control’ as its currently foreign to me - having said that, if a bookmarked word can’t be updated it might not be suitable as many bookmarks have comments which I update…

It only has to be protected until you've done the search and replace.

I think it is easiest to use the third method - select the content where the replacements are meant to happen and stop after the end of the selection is reached.

Hi Guessed,

UPDATE: since having written the paragraph below, I adopted your first solution i.e. 'Find/replace and put ^c' then 'reinstate a bookmark by just creating it again' - this is working fine, I'm happy using that method and so below might be pointless to try n resolve...BTW - the time you have saved me is beyond measure...big thanks

To actuate the locked control change, I followed instructions detailed under the heading 'Lock part of documents with content control in Word' at this webpage: How to lock parts of document in Word? ... having implemented the locked control change, I then followed your above Find & Replace instructions and it worked perfectly on a test document (one page with approx ten words), however the target document crashes i.e. when I select 'Replace All', the process seemingly commences then I receive the following dialogue window messages, in order: 1) 'You cannot close Microsoft Office Word because a dialogue box is open. Click OK, switch to Word, and then close the dialogue box' - noting I did not try to close Word I clicked the dialogue box 'OK' and 2) 'There is insufficient memory or a fatal disk error. Word is closing the saved document'. As for 'insufficient memory' - the target document: is 14MB, 3,273 pages long, contains over 775,000 words - most of which are hyperlinked and contain comments...thoughts? ps thanx for your patience
