When I copy a shape into another document it becomes a picture. I want a shape.

.......something else just occurred to me.....
I have a shape format on one document and I want to copy it to another document.
When I do, the format automatically changes so it becomes a picture format.
Is there any way I can copy a shape from one document and it remains a shape on the second document ?
