Different margins for header and text

I'm working in MS Word 2010 on a 13-page document. I want the header margins to be .3 left and right, with the same header on all pages. There is no footer. I want the text margins to be 1 inch right, left, and bottom. How do I do that?

Set the left and right indents for your header style to be where you want the edges of your text to be. You do not change the "margins" in Word to accomplish this.

See Letterhead Textboxes and Styles Tutorial on my downloads page for an example. Both the first-page footer and the continuation-page header extend outside the page margins.

Thank you, Charles. I figured this out--a little differently from your suggestion, though. I set up the header with the margins I wanted and then used a continuous break. Worked perfectly.

I wish you luck. I would not recommend your method, as described, to anyone.
Take a look at the header on page 2 of your document.

Here are three screen shots from a document set up the way you describe. Note the rulers shown in the shots.

The first screenshot is taken from in the header editing view. The second is taken on the same page but from within the document. The third is taken at the page division between the first and second page. The margins in the header on the second page are the same as those in the text. The header in section 2 is linked to previous with absolutely no editing.

You may be changing indents rather than margins. If you are, no section break is required. See the next post.

Again, margins are a section property. You can not have more than one margin setting within the same section. Headers and footers are also section parts.

Indents are paragraph settings and should be set in styles. In this case, in the Header style.

Here are screenshots of a document set up with no section break. Note the Indent settings in the rulers when in the header compared to those in the body of the document.

Even if your method worked, which when I do it, it does not, I would not recommend it because it adds an unneeded section break to the document. This increases the structural complexity of the document making it harder to edit.

I suspect that you may be a refugee (perhaps unwilling) from Wordperfect, where margins are changed the way you describe. Word for Word Perfect Users

Charles, I would like to set the margin of my headers outside of the margins of the main document. I could not open the links that you had shared on how I could go about the adjustments.
