Hi!!
I am a high school math teacher (geometry). I have over 25 years worth of files, almost all of them in Word and MathType. ALL of my documents have some kind of a drawing.....and most are very detailed. I have been using MS Office 2016. I save my documents as .doc because when I save as .docx the drawings, graphics, graphs, etc. do not convert well, at all. A few weeks ago I went to edit the worksheets and notes for the next unit. All of a sudden, literally like in an hour, I couldn't adjust any of my drawings. I need to adjust side lengths of polygons, move vertices around, adjust lines on a graph, etc. I can't do any of that anymore. I tried to save the documents in .docx. Well, when I saved them the drawings converted to pictures. And, I can't convert the picture back to a drawing. BUT, if I save file as .doc i can't adjust ANY of my drawings, graphics, etc. I went back to documents I had just edited, and I could no longer manipulate any of them. Over the past week, I went ahead and updated to Windows 11, Office 365, AND MS Office 2019. Still......can't edit any of my drawings. ARGHHHHH......I have searched and searched the web to find out what is going on, but to no avail. I double check all my settings, nothing has changed. Any thoughts??? |

There is a known bug in Word that prevents users from resizing shapes and text boxes with drag & drop. Microsoft is investigating this but it isn't yet known when we can expect a fix.
As a workaround, you can use the controls on the ribbon to modify the objects. Or you can convert the document to the most recent *.docx format.

I heard that it may be a Word issue. I tried using the ribbon controls and it was crazy challenging, mainly when I tried to change the slope of a line. I did try changing into .docx, but the drawings converted over as a picture which wouldn’t allow me to ungroup so I could adjust. I tried to convert picture back to drawing, but it wouldn’t let me.

Grouping/ungrouping is definitely supported in converted *.docx files as well.
Typically, you shouldn't lose formatting when you "upgrade" a document to the most recent *.docx format. What type of drawing object are you dealing with? Could you share a sample document?
