![]() Hi. In a Table of Contents, the page numbers of some headings were omitted through the n\ switch. My problem is that when I open the saved document, the n switch is no longer part the format. How do I save the no-page numbers in the selected headings? Thank you. |

What do you see where the Table of Contents should be when you open the document and press Alt-F9?

When I press Alt F9, I see {TOC\o"1-6"\h\z\u}.

Any switches present when you last saved the document should also be there the next time you open it. Display the field code (as Paul suggested).
On the other hand, if you want to re-use a particular TOC, including any switches, you can save it as an AutoText entry.

Thank you Paul, Stefan. I saved the document with the code displayed and it did the trick, the n switch is still there. In my previous TOC, I did the formatting just before printing so I wouldn't repeat it everytime I open the TOC.

You can also save to the TOC gallery so that it will show up under Insert Table of Contents. |

Indeed. I wrote "AutoText" but maybe I should have suggested creating a Building Block of the "Table of Contents" type. :-)

Another way that gets to the same place is to use the "Save to Table of Contents Gallery..." command in the Table of Contents drop-down.

Thank you Stefan and Charles. My computer is having a system malfunction. I will try your suggestions when Windows goes back running to normal.

I hope it is soon. My experience is that my computer starts acting flaky when Windows thinks it wants to update.

I did not know until this thread that the TOC could be separately saved. Thank you.

What Charles & Stefan described in posts 6-8 is a method of saving the TOC field code for re-use. The TOC thus generated will relate to the document to which it is applied; it will not regenerate the original TOC entries.

Ah okay. I searched and followed the instructions on how to save in the TOC gallery but I stopped short of saving because I'm still many years away from senelity to forget the particular field code for omitting page numbers in specific levels h h.
