Thank you Paul, Stefan. I saved the document with the code displayed and it did the trick, the n switch is still there. In my previous TOC, I did the formatting just before printing so I wouldn't repeat it everytime I open the TOC.

It makes no difference to Word whether the field code is displayed when you do the save. The field code, including the switches will be saved along with the rest of the document.

That suggests you weren't saving the document after doing your formatting.
