Default cannot remove a heading from a document and update the table of contents

Hi everyone. I have Word 2010 and Windows 7.
I am writing a long piece using heading 1 for chapter titles and heading 2 for headings in the body of the text.
These latter headings are numbered; thus, 7.2 indicates chapter 7, second heading.
I need to remove a heading 2, to which end I highlight it, delete it and click on "update table of contents".

But in the table the heading has gone but the heading number sequence has not been changed. For chapter 7 it reads 7.1, then 7.3 and so on. so that it is out of sequence. How can I fix it?
Thanks very much.
