Change the "Start at" setting for level 1 in your multilevel list so that the list starts at 1 (instead of 6). I have done that for you in the attached file here.

Thank you Stefan. The "Start At" just replaced the 6 to 1. What I need is to delete the 6. in all the hierarchical numbers so that all the names would be elevated to the next higher level. Like, 6.1 should be 1 not 1.1. 6.1.1 should be 1.1 not 1.1.1, 6.1.2 should be 1.2 not 1.1.2. Or, in the template that you attached, is there a quick method of making all the levels to the next upper level?

You can "promote" a paragraph by clicking inside it and then pressing Alt+Shift+Left arrow. I doubt that you could do this in a simple step (that is, it won't necessarily work as expected if you select all the text and promote it).
Note that managing multilevel lists will be a lot easier if you set them up with paragraph styles (one style per numbering level). See the article at https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.

Change the view to OUTLINE
Select all the text Use the Promote button to move everything up one level (this will change 6.1 to 6, 6.1.1 to 6.1, etc.) The Promote button may look like an arrow pointing to the left Close OUTLINE VIEW OR select PAGE LAYOUT VIEW Now right-click the first paragraph (6). and do the RESTART NUMBERING Last edited by Eowyn; 06-29-2019 at 12:53 PM. Thank you Eowyn and Stefan. You have solved my problem, saving me a great deal of time from manually assigning a new number to each and every member in the list.
