I agree, "automatic numbering will not produce a SEQuence Field".

As for using "AutoText for that", when I go into Insert>Quick Parts>AutoText, it has a greyed out "Save selection to AutoText". As I am creating a template that will be used by who knows who with who knows what in their clipboard, I'm uncertain how AutoText is going to create a SEQuence Field. I really do need the static SEQuence Field to be inserted only when a particular style is used (which may or may not be used in the document, i.e., if no headings are used in the document, then there will be no need to create a table of contents on either paragraph numbers or pages).

I agree, my "numbering should be set up" as Shauna Kelly has advised: as far as I know, they are. Which is to say, my headings fall under a defined list style called "Headings" (step 3 of Kelly's instructions) and my paragraphs fall under a defined list style called "BodyList" (step 4 of Kelly's instructions). Is your implicit suggestion that I fold all my numbering into only one defined list style and that doing so will allow me to create a table of contents on paragraph numbering more easily?

I'm not certain, but I don't think this question has anything to do with numbering or lists, as the <\c "H-List"> switch is giving me all the numbering I need. But again, thank you for the reply.
